Harry Potter Party Game: Boggart Pictionary

At our very first Harry Potter party (more about the party in this post!), we played a game we created called Boggart Pictionary! We briefly described it in our first post, but people have asked for more details, so here they are…

The way we have set up our annual Harry Potter party is by first randomly sorting into teams (an example of one way we’ve done that here!) and then have our house teams compete in 7 challenges throughout the day, one for each book. Boggart Pictionary is a game we played for our book 3 challenge as that is the book when Harry and the gang are first introduced to boggarts.

We took the game of Pictionary and added a Harry Potter twist by making all of the drawing prompts be something scary from the wizarding world – because Boggarts turn into a person’s biggest fear. Teams took turns sending one member to pull a fear from the bag and then draw that fear so that their teammates could guess it. The team has one minute to guess it to earn a point and when they get it right, the drawer yells “Ridikulus!” (the spell that is used to defeat a boggart by turning it into something humorous instead of the feared thing).

Some game logistics… we wanted the whole group to be able to see the drawings so we used large sheets cut from a roll of paper. You could also use easel paper pads. And we made sure to have enough prompts so that everyone would have a turn to draw and so that each team had the same number of opportunities to earn points (so you may need more fears than the number of players if you have uneven teams!).

And now for the fun part, here are our Boggart Pictionary prompts, all of them being possible fears from the wizarding world…

  • Being petrified by a basilisk
  • Dementor’s kiss
  • Stealing an egg from a dragon
  • Re-potting a mandrake
  • Rogue bludgers
  • Writing lines with Umbridge
  • Playing giant wizards chess
  • Choking on the snitch
  • Answering fanmail with Lockhart
  • Book of Monsters
  • Shrieking Shack
  • Burping up slugs
  • When your rat turns out to be a murderer
  • Wiping troll boogers off your wand
  • That feeling when you accidentally walk through a ghost
  • Getting splinched
  • Half giant breaking down the door to tell you you’re a wizard
  • Harry & Hermione kissing
  • Falling out of the boat into the lake as a 1st year
  • Struggling against devil’s snare
  • Too much butter beer
  • Womping Willow
  • Ron’s dress robes
  • When your name shows up in the goblet of fire
  • Following the spiders into the Forbidden Forest

Those are some of the ideas that we had; we know that some of them are pretty outlandish but we thought our friends would enjoy the challenge. You can always adjust based on your guests!

Something else to note, decide how specific or accurate the answers need to be – some of these are pretty wordy so we let our teams have it if they were close or got the gist of it, even if it wasn’t word for word.

Some other ideas for Harry Potter Pictionary…

  • Patronus Pictionary – happy times in the Harry Potter series OR forms that patronuses can take
  • Magical Creatures Pictionary
  • Hogwarts Classes Pictionary

And that’s how we did Boggart Pictionary at our Harry Potter Party! What ideas do you have for other Boggart Pictionary prompts or other versions of Harry Potter Pictionary?
