Harry Potter Sorting Hat Left-Right Game

When we posted about our first Harry Potter party, we shared how we randomly sorted all of our guests into houses and we’ve gotten several comments asking for more details! So here it is…

We played our own version of the “left-right” game we remembered from elementary school! In this game, each participant holds something in their hands and the teacher reads a story. They have to listen closely because whenever they hear the word “left”, everyone passes their object to the left and whenever they hear “right”, they pass to the right.

In our case, the teacher was Dumbledore (my brother-in-law, Nelson, who was our master of ceremonies throughout the party) and the story was the sorting hat song. For the objects, we made one little paper pyramid for each guest that had a tie in their house colors inside.

Once everyone picked up their pyramid, we had everyone stand in a circle while we listened to the song. Here are the full lyrics to the song…

Welcome one and all, come right in and take a seat,
Let an old hat say his greetings before I leave you to your feast.

Our story begins with young Harry left sleeping under the stairs,
Right before his birthday, Hagrid gave Mr. Dursley his worst nightmare.

After asking for directions, Harry finds his platform to the right,
Running right at a brick wall, the passage to 9 ¾ is a bit tight.

Harry’s sorting was difficult when two houses seemed right,
In the end I was left with one option, Gryffindor won that night.

To save the Stone, Ron made all the right moves in a game of Wizards Chess,
In the end poor Mr. Filch was left to clean up all the mess.

The rightful heir opened the Chamber of Secrets, Mudbloods Beware,
Our Trio is left to solve the mystery, mixing Polyjuice potion with just the right hair.

Year three we write werewolf essays and face our greatest fears,
The boggart in the cupboard could bring anyone to tears.

The Triwizard tournament comes next, putting our champions to the test,
Righteous contenders facing off to prove who’s the best.

Between detention and Dumbledore’s Army there’s no time left to hit the books
But students without the right answers on their OWLs will be left overlooked.

Magical creatures to the left and right, hippogriffs, threstrals and even a 3-headed pup
All the while 4 houses yearn for the right to hoist the house cup.

In the end we’ll join together, to stand for what is right
With a few days left at Hogwarts, we will win the fight.

Artifacts missing from each house, we must recover the theft
Right beneath our noses, we search for the horcruxes he left.

It is almost time to eat, but right before you do
Open up your sorting hat to find what Hogwarts house suits you!

And now everyone can open up their pyramid and find out what house they will be in for the day!
